Guang Ming College on its 5th year of operation has participated in various national and local academic and cultural activities.
GMC Students Receive Awards during the 11th Word Cup Journalism Seminar Masterclass last Sept. 15-16, 2018.
1) GMC Students Receive Awards during the 11th Word Cup Journalism Seminar Masterclass last Sept. 15-16, 2018
The masterclass was organized by Word Cup Associated Editors, Co. under the leadership of Prof. Eugenio Calapit, Conference Director. It aims to let the participants build on their reportorial skills and learn the tricks of the trade from seasoned academics and professional journalists.
During the seminar, contests on writing newspaper, editorial, science writing, feature writing, etc. were also provided. Students from Guang Ming College received awards on the following: Aleya Joy Placencia-1st place in Editorial Writing, Marrie Tordillos-2nd place in Feature Writing, Ricca Marie Regala-3rd place in News Writing, Christine Joy Blanco-Honorable Mention in Radio and Television Broadcasting.
The Guang Ming Dance Project placed 5th place in the 2018 Sayaw Pinoy NCCA National Dance Competition last October 21, 2018 held at the Rizal Park open Air Auditorium. “Competition is not meant to divide us but to improve us” said Phenelope Diaz Belmonte, executive director of NCCA in her opening remarks.
2) Guang Ming Dance Project placed 5th place in the 2018 Sayaw Pinoy NCCA National Dance Competition last October 21, 2018
The said competition was joined by various dance groups nationwide showcasing the genius of dance choreographers. Its objective is to promote dance in its various forms. This year’s competition was on Folk Dance, Contemporary, Ballroom, and Hip-Hop.
Guang Ming College participated in two categories: Folk Dance and Contemporary. In Folk Dance, they performed “Cariñosa”, a courtship dance from Rapu-Rapu, Albay, while in Contemporary, they performed the “Samasama”, a call to remembrance of how our togetherness should always be welcomed. Both dance pieces were choreographed by Al Bernard Garcia, one of the dance instructors in the College.
Two Fourth Year Guang Ming College student join the 5th National Student Research Conference at the Development Academy of the Philippines last December 3-4, 2018. Bachelor in Performing Arts Theater graduating students Wincy Ramilo and Ralph Jade Tampal represented the college presenting their in-progress thesis work.

The said conference was sponsored by the Commission on Higher Education offered to all senior high school and university students in the Philippines. Only 80 applicants were chosen to present their research papers.
“I am offering all of this success to Venerable Master Hsing Yun for his support and countless love to us and we will rest assure that Humanistic Buddhism will continue to grow not only within us but to propagate it to other people using arts, theater, and any other forms of communication” said Wincy Ramilo after being acknowledged as one of the five Best Presenters.
Eight students from Guang Ming College participated in the 2019 World Interfaith Harmony Week celebration happened last Feb 2, 2019 in Camp Polo, Antipolo City.
The theme of this year’s Peace Camp was “Celebrating Truth, Sincerity and Forgiveness”. It was participated by over 100 youths aged 18 years old and above from different groups of faith. Some of them were team of volunteer organizers and leaders.
The peace camp was design for the youth to appreciate and understand the uniqueness with others despite of its differences in faith. It was sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which was on its 6th year.
This event was made to foster understanding, appreciation and respect for each individual’s faith, develop commonalities despite diversity, and establish rapport for peace-building and future partnerships.
Guang Ming College’s Dharma Theater Ensemble performed the “Faith” in Pasinaya Open House Festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines last February 3, 2019.
“Faith” was a play written by Ralph Jade Tampal and directed by Wincy Ramilo, graduating theater students of Guang Ming College. It was performed by chosen students from Performing Arts Department namely Mary Evangeline Recto as Amina, Rizalve Ancajas as Nhor, Richard Moscare as Akmad, and Cyril Valeriano as Akmad the child.
The Pasinaya Open House Festival is the multi-arts festival celebrated its 15th edition for three days of workshops, exhibits, performances, museum tours, and street events. The event was attended by more than 80,000 audiences. The venues of the CCP were transformed into the most creative place in the Philippines.
Eight GMC Students join the PNPRS 2019 National Conference in Baguio City. The Philippine National Philosophical Research Society, in collaboration with Saint Louis University, hosted the 2019 National Conference with the theme “Society, Heritage, and Indigenous Arts” held at St. Gevers Hall of Saint Louis University, Baguio City last February 7-9, 2019. The conference aims to provide a creative avenue for an interdisciplinary discourse on the theme mentioned. It is to subject the historical and cultural values pertaining to society, heritage and indigenous arts to philosophical rethinking and critical reflection. Also, to make Philosophy an essential instrument and academic discipline in nation-building and world understanding, particularly recognizing loyalty to philosophy and to the nation.
There were 64 papers and 84 presenters from different colleges and universities around the Philippines. This year, eight students from Guang Ming College respectively from the Department of Buddhist Studies presented their papers which talk about Humanistic Buddhism, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, and different disciplines of Philosophy.
The papers presented were “Karma and Treating Other Fairly” by Jeraldine Cobacha, ‘A Comparative Study of Venerable Master Hsing Yun Compassion and Mahatma Gandhi Concept of Non-Violence” by Lesno Mettan Salvatierra, “Chan Buddhist in Action: A Biographical Analysis of Venerable Master Hsing Yun” by Shena Marie Pacano, “The Existentialist (Friedrich Nietzsche) and a Buddhist (Venerable Master Hsing Yun)” by Norlyn Pando, “Karuna and Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation: A Study of Compassion on Animals” by Kit Brian Valderrama and Angelica Mae Timban, and “Karuna and Kapwa: A Comparative Research on the core of Buddhism and Filipino psychology” by Aleya Joy Placencia and Emmalyn Relox.

Last April 4-6, 2019, a panel composed of faculty and students represented Guang Ming College at the Expressions of the Dharma: Buddhist Art and Culture in Everyday Life, a conference hosted by the Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple and the University of the West in Los Angeles, California, USA.

The Guang Ming College delegation presented a panel entitled “Paglalayag: Journeys on Learning, Living, and Propagating Expressions of Dharma through Performing Arts.” Heidi Salih Emelo, GMC alumna, presented “Transformative Pedagogy: Learning and Experiencing Buddhism as Cultivation in Creating and Performing Arts” by Professor Katherine Mae Sabate.
Professor Al Bernard Garcia facilitated a workshop on “The Experience and Practice of Mindfulness Meditation through the Expressions and Improvisations of Movement and Dance. Dance majors Cychaina Jontillano and Cyril Valeriano presented a paper on “Site-specific Dance: A conscious choreographic process informed by the concept of mindfulness.” While theatre major Gian Carlo Navarro presented “Voice of Dharma: A phenomenological analysis of Buddhist arts and culture through Performing Arts” and Ralph Jade Tampal’s paper on “Buddhism and the Performing Arts: Analysis on the juxtaposition of the Buddhist concept of right view and the Islamic concept of Niat by a Muslim scholar.”
Guang Ming College and its inaugural class of graduates participated in the BLIA parallel session during the 63rd UN Commission on that Status of Women last March 11, 2019 at the auditorium of the Salvation Army on 52nd Street, New York City, USA. Graduates Heidi Salih Emelo and Dyan Rezlie Panganiban shared their personal narratives on how the BLIA through Guang Ming College have transformed their lives. They also performed the Kappa Malong Malong and the song Vast Clouds and Stars.

RECRUITMENT
One unique feature of Guang Ming College is in its diverse student population. Every year, talented and promising scholars are recruited all over the country to be offered place at Guang Ming College. Students from various locations from Masbate to Ilocos Norte, Zamboanga City, and in Calbayog, Samar were oriented on Humanistic Buddhism and the Three Acts of Goodness propagated by Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
