Guang Ming College Report
Guang Ming College was envisioned to become the premiere Buddhist learning institution in the Philippines. Founded by the generosity and passion of Venerable Master Hsing Yun of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist order in Taiwan, Guang Ming College has grown to produce top notch scholars and graduates in the fields of Buddhist studies and the performing arts.
Guang Ming College has participated in various national and international and academic and cultural competitions and activities such as Sayaw Pinoy, United Nations 63rd Session Commission on the status of women, 5th National student Research Conference, Expression of the Dharma: Buddhist Art and culture in everyday life.
Guang Ming College joined Sayaw Pinoy 2019 NCAA National Dance Competition Contemporary and Folk Dance Category held at Rizal Park Open Air Auditorium last October 19, 2019. The said competition was joined by different dance troupe and companies both professional and upcoming groups all over the country. Its objective is to showcase the colorful tradition of dances and movements and to discover the talents of individuals.
Inaugural graduates Dyan Rezlie Panganiban(BPA Dance) and Heidi Emelo (BPA Theater) with JJ Ang represented GMC and FGS during the 63rd Commission on the Status of Women 2019 at the United Nations Headquarters, New York in their panel presentation titled “Setting New Standards for Inclusive and Progressive Global Education Featuring a Performance by Inaugural Graduates of GMC”. The theme for the event was “Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.” Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world attended the session.
GMC students Wincy ramilo and Ralph Jade Tampla presented their ongoing theses at the 5th National Student Research Conference, a bi-annual conference for students organized by the A&A Knowledge Base Research Consultancy and Training Inc. Tampal presented his research “Addressing Stereotypes against Muslim Filipinos through Theater: A Dramaturgical Approach of Education Non-Islam Filipinos on the concept of Jihad and other Islamic Practices,” while Ramilo was awarded as one of the five Best Presenters for her presentation “DepictingViolence Against Women: A Devising Project inspired by Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s prayer for oppressed Women” during the conference.
The Institute of the Study of Humanistic Buddhism (ISHB) at the University of the West and Fo Guang Shan His Lai temple hosted the conference “Expressions of the Dharma: Buddhist Art and Culture in Everyday Life” last April 4-6, 2019 in Los Angeles, California to mark the publication of the English e3dition of the Encyclopedia of Buddhist Arts. GMC professors Al Bernard Garcia and Katherine Sabate, together with students Cychaina Jontilano, Gian Carlo Navarro, Ralph Jade Tampal, and Cyril Valeriano were accepted into the conference to present their research.
Fourth year Theater Arts student Richard Moscare, in collaboration with classmates Mary Owen Flores and Tsyl Kriz Claud, won 3rd Prize for their film “Kapit (Hope for Life)” in the 2019 BLIA International Microfilm Contest Awards held in Paris, France last October 3, 2019.
GMC Activities
Guang Ming College Harmonies and GMC Dharma Theater Ensemble presented Me(t)taHarmonies: A Night of Music & Remembrance, a Celebration of loving-kindness through songs & harmonies last November 17, 2019. Featuring an excerpt from Pat Valera’s Mula sa Buwan and a repertoire of the Filipino-Humanistic Buddhist cultures thru songs of various genres from folk, ethnic, kundiman, OPM, and original FGS songs composed by Ven. Master Yong Guang.
Guang Ming College has its new set of Student Council Officers. President- Reyjohn Guzman, Vice President- John Mark Cabaluna, Secretary- Nicole- Ann Lucas, Treasurer-Psyche Queen Dorothy Saberon, Public Relation Officer - Arthur Paul Quirante, Community Relation Officer- Ramzel Leo Miras, Peace Officer-Pedro Agan and Carylle Mermida, Dance Representative- Love Joy Labor, Theater Representative- Aubrey Savet, and Buddhist Representative- Florenze Nino Bacalaoloayo.
Professor Cecile Manikan (known in the education sector as the “trainer of trainers and teacher of teachers”) of the Asian Institute of Management conducted three (3) days session about Whole Brain Self-Mastery Training, last September 23-25, 2019, that was attended by all Guang Ming College students, teachers and faculties.
RECRUITMENT
One unique feature of Guang Ming College is in its diverse student population. Every year, talented and promising scholars are recruited all over the country to be offered place at Guang Ming College. Students from various locations from Masbate to Ilocos Norte, Zamboanga City, and in Calbayog, Samar were oriented on Humanistic Buddhism and the Three Acts of Goodness propagated by Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
